Undergraduate Research Assistant in Railroad Transportation Safety and Data Analysis

The Rail Transportation and Engineering Center (RailTEC) Rail Safety and Risk Group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is looking for 1-2 hourly-paid undergraduate research assistants who excel in programming (Python, R, Matlab, VBA, SQL), ArcGIS, and statistics and ML data analytics and have interests in transportation. Students will have the opportunity to participate in practical railway data and risk analysis projects. Students will also get to learn engineering and operational principles and knowledge for railway transportation. This is a position that will continue as long as the student is studying at the university.

Minimum qualifications

  • Interested in transportation risk analysis
  • Basic knowledge of statistics (equivalent to STAT 400)
  • Basic to intermediate programming skills (preferably Python, R, Excel VBA)
  • Self-motivated and ready to learn
  • Able to work 5-10 hours per week
