General ELA Position

An Engineering Learning Assistant (ELA) is a trained advanced undergraduate who leads the instruction of Engineering 100 and serves as a peer advisor/mentor to the students in their ENG 100 section for the fall semester.

Qualifications

  • Engineering student in good academic standing
  • Eligible to work in the United States/on campus
  • Will have taken classes on UIUC campus (or an affiliated study abroad) for four semesters before appointment
  • Documented leadership and involvement in University, department, and/or engineering organizations
  • Effective communication and presentation skills
  • Enthusiastic about sharing first-hand experiences with first-year students

Responsibilities

  • Attend Launch!
  • Instruct and facitate one ENG100 section of 20-25 students, following materials provided
  • Participate in weekly meetings with department ELAs while ENG100 is meeting
  • Provide direction, guidance, and mentorship to students in their ENG100 section during the first semester

Training Requirements

  • New ELAs Only: ELA training course during the first eight weeks of Spring semester (1 credit)
  • Both New and Returning ELAs: One training session in the fall (paid)

Time Commitment

First 8 Weeks: 6-8 hours per week
Second 8 Weeks: 5 hours per week

Compensation

$13.00/hour
