Course Objectives

The purpose of the course is to introduce you to the profession of engineering, including the wide variety of fields of study and potential careers. Additionally, Engineering Learning Assistants will assist in fostering a network of support, providing consistent, reliable sources of support, information and inspiration, aid in the academic, emotional, and social adjustment, and help develop positive student relationships with peers, staff, and faculty.

You will also explore what it takes to be successful, both now as a student and in the future as a graduate in the profession of engineering. You will learn some of the most important skills for exemplary leadership, professional practice, and life-long learning as an engineer.

You may have other, personal objectives for this course. Develop those objectives and share them with your Engineering Learning Assistant (ELA), so they can help you be successful.

Course Overview

Engineering 100, with its small sections and the leadership of upperclassmen mentors (ELAs), aims to disseminate critical information, advice, and insights for you to be successful in your first-year engineering experience and beyond! It is meant to provide you with an introduction to the engineering profession, to the skills that are needed to be a successful student and engineer, and to essential resources at the university. It is also an opportunity to reflect on your experience of transitioning to college.

ENG 100 meets for the first semester. Classes are 50 minutes and meet twice a week for the first four weeks, and once a week for the rest of the semester with peer advising/mentoring throughout the entire semester.

Course Instructors

ELAs lead the instruction and facilitation of ENG 100 sections. They will also be your peer advisor for the semester. ELAs are trained advance undergraduates and are active participants in the first-year experience. They serve as mentors, instructors, and peer advisors for all first-year students.

Peer Advising & Mentoring

Use your ELA as a resource after the classroom portion of ENG 100 is over. They will contact you throughout the semester updating you on events and activities in your department and the college. They will also meet with you one on one or in a small group, getting updated on progress and transition to Illinois.

Registration

Registration for ENG 100 is done during New Student Registration. Students must register for the ENG 100 sections that align with their major.
